Toccoa Falls dropping 186 feet over a rock face in Toccoa, GA

Toccoa Falls drops 186 feet on the University of Toccoa Falls campus.

Toccoa, GA is a small town in Stephens County, about 1 hour 45 minutes northeast of Atlanta, and the best things to do are 186-foot Toccoa Falls ($2), Camp Toccoa at Currahee, Traveler's Rest State Historic Site and dinner at Sage Street Ale Works downtown. Saturday is the only day all of them are open.

I've been to Toccoa Falls three times now, but Toccoa has more than the falls. The camp where the Band of Brothers trained sits at the foot of Currahee Mountain, Georgia's last stagecoach inn is just east of town, and downtown has a brewpub with really good pizza and wings.

I'd call Toccoa a day trip. You can hit all of these spots in a few hours. You'll get off I-85 at Lavonia on the way up, so here's my Lavonia, GA guide if you want to add a stop.

Things to Do in Toccoa, GA

The short list, with a full guide for the big three:

  • Toccoa Falls: a 186-foot waterfall about 100 flat yards from the gift shop. I've been three times. Don't forget your $2.

  • Traveler's Rest State Historic Site: Georgia's last stagecoach inn, open on weekends.

A Saturday in Toccoa

Morning: Camp Toccoa at Currahee

Start at Camp Toccoa, because on Saturdays it's only open from 9 AM to noon. It's about 5 miles west-southwest of downtown, at the foot of Currahee Mountain, the mountain the paratroopers ran in training. Admission is free, and donations support the restoration.

I walked the site on my own in July 2026 and spent about an hour. What stuck with me most was how hard the beds are. I couldn't imagine running up the mountain in training and then coming back to those beds every night. Here's my full Camp Toccoa guide.

Late Morning: Currahee Military Museum

For more of the Easy Company story, the Currahee Military Museum is downtown at 160 N. Alexander Street, inside a 1915 train depot. It covers Stephens County history along with the WWII regiments that trained at Camp Toccoa. It opens at 10 AM, Monday to Saturday, and adult admission is $15, with discounts for seniors, veterans and students and free entry for kids 8 and under.

Midday: Toccoa Falls

The falls open at noon on weekends. Toccoa Falls drops 186 feet on the campus of the University of Toccoa Falls, and it's about 100 yards from the Gate Cottage gift shop on a flat gravel path. You pay inside the gift shop, and parking is free.

I've been to Toccoa Falls three times now. My one tip: don't forget your $2 to see the falls. Here's my full Toccoa Falls guide, including the story of the 1977 flood.

Afternoon: Traveler's Rest State Historic Site

Traveler's Rest is about 6 miles east of downtown on Riverdale Road, open Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Adult admission is $5.50 plus tax, and you tour the inn on your own.

I visited once, on a Sunday afternoon in November 2025, and walked the house and grounds on my own in about 45 minutes. The building is what stood out to me. You can smell the history inside. Here's my full Traveler's Rest guide.

Evening: Sage Street Ale Works

End downtown at Sage Street Ale Works, 102 N. Sage Street. They make their own beer right there. I've been, and they have some really good pizza and wings, with some really good beers to go with them. On Saturdays they're open 12:30 to 10 PM, and the kitchen closes at 9.

What I'd Tell a Friend

  • Treat Toccoa as a day trip. The falls, Camp Toccoa and Traveler's Rest fit in a few hours.

  • Don't forget your $2 to see the falls.

  • I went to Camp Toccoa in July, so go early in the day and bring water.

A Little History

Traveler's Rest is the oldest of the three. James R. Wyly built it around 1815 as an inn on the Unicoi Turnpike, a busy road through the mountains. Devereaux Jarrett bought it in 1833 and enlarged it as the home of his 14,400-acre plantation on the Tugaloo River, worked by enslaved people. The state calls it Georgia's last stagecoach inn, and it became a National Historic Landmark in 1964.

Camp Toccoa was built in the 1930s and first served the National Guard. In July 1942, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment arrived to train as paratroopers, and its E Company was later featured in Band of Brothers. The men hiked and ran the roads up Currahee Mountain under the saying "3 miles up, 3 miles down."

Toccoa Falls carries harder history. At about 1:30 AM on November 6, 1977, the Kelly Barnes Dam above the campus failed, and 39 people died in the flood.

When to Visit

Saturday is the day to go, since it's the only day every stop is open. Toccoa Falls closes for Thanksgiving week, Wednesday, November 25, through Sunday, November 29, 2026, and on several holidays and school breaks, so check the University of Toccoa Falls site before a holiday trip.

In summer, start early. I went to Camp Toccoa in July, so go early in the day and bring water. In late fall, the bare trees let you see the whole length of the inn at Traveler's Rest from the yard, which is how I saw it in November.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Showing up at Camp Toccoa on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday. It's only open Thursday and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

  • Planning Traveler's Rest on a weekday. It's open weekends only.

  • Getting to the falls after 4 PM. You enter through the gift shop, and it closes at 4.

  • Forgetting your $2 for the falls.

  • Counting on Sage Street early in the week. It's closed Monday through Wednesday.
