Middle Georgia
Middle Georgia is closer than most people think. Head about an hour south of Atlanta on I-75 and you'll find state parks, waterfalls and small towns that most of us drive right past on the way to the beach. Here's where to go.

High Falls State Park and Jackson
The tallest cascading waterfall south of Atlanta, a short walk from the parking lot, plus a lake, mill ruins and camping.

Indian Springs State Park and Flovilla
One of the oldest state parks in the country, with a sulfur spring, CCC stone buildings and a trail to Dauset Trails.
Planning a Middle Georgia day trip
Both parks on this page sit near Jackson, about an hour south of Atlanta off I-75, and they're close enough to pair in one day: the waterfall at High Falls in the morning, then the spring house and the history at Indian Springs.
When to go
Spring and fall are the most comfortable for the longer trails, and the falls are strongest after a good rain. Summer works too if you go early.
Good to know
- Both are Georgia State Parks, so parking is $10 per car with the ParkPass.
- The High Falls waterfall is a short walk from the parking lot, so it works for every age.
- Want spring water from Indian Springs? Bring a plastic jug. Glass isn't allowed in the spring house.
- For food, Jackson has local spots like Mesquite Mexican Grill & Bar, which can seat a big group.
More of Middle Georgia is on the way
I'm adding more Middle Georgia parks and towns. Until then, find more close-to-home trips in my Metro Atlanta guides, or browse every park in my Georgia State Parks guide.
