What Morgan Hardware Is Like
The brick storefront and big front windows
From the street, Morgan's is a long brick storefront with big front windows and a Hardware sign. Inside, it is a working hardware store and a time capsule at the same time.
Old farm tools and wagon wheels above the shelves
The atmosphere is what stood out to me most. You can feel how old Morgan's is the moment you walk in, and you can feel the history of the building still preserved inside. Old farm tools, wagon wheels and antiques hang high on the walls above shelves stocked with everything you need today.
Aisles of tools and hardware
A lot of the storage and shelving has been in the store for about 80 years, so the bins, drawers and racks are part of the history too.
The antique cash register by the door
Look for the ornate antique cash register sitting on a wooden cabinet near the door.
Talk to Eddie
The wood stove and chairs in the back
If you go, talk to Eddie. He is the man in charge at Morgan's, and I would go there just to talk to him. The back of the store has a wood stove, a few chairs and walls full of antiques.
Antiques and history on every wall
What You Can Buy at Morgan Hardware in Lavonia, GA
The paint and spray paint aisle
Morgan's is still a full hardware store. The store carries hardware, plumbing, electrical and gardening supplies, plus paint and spray paint, rollers and brushes, cordless power tools, tool storage, outdoor cooking gear, patio furniture, blinds and insulation. Brands on its site include Milwaukee, DEWALT, Stanley, Channellock, Rust-Oleum, Scotts, Traeger and Broil King.
It is also Lavonia's STIHL Elite Dealer and service location, and it offers small engine repair, key duplication and glass cutting. There is even an appliance parts department with common parts like stove eyes, heating elements and some dryer parts.
The Small Town Experience
When I hosted the Small Town Experience in Lavonia, in partnership with the Lavonia Downtown Development Authority, Morgan's was part of the day. It fits right in with lunch at 211 Main Street, a stop at Texvonia Meat Market and a pottery class at The Works.
A Little History
Morgan Hardware says it has been helping its friends and neighbors since 1895. I was told it is the oldest store in Franklin County.
The store sits on Grogan Street in downtown Lavonia, a town that grew up around the railroad and was incorporated in 1880. Downtown's historic commercial district, which includes Grogan Street, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Mistakes to Avoid
Showing up on a Sunday. The store is closed on Sundays.
Rushing through. Look up. Some of the best antiques hang high on the walls.
